Flavius Constans - just about the last Roman...

In a speedy turn around, I have just managed to get my fourth and final (for now) SAM-in-10mm warband painted up to a satisfactory level - the Milites of Venta Belgarum. They are led by Flavius Constans who reckons that he may be just about the last Roman left in Britain with Imperial blood... but is not too confident about the claim. See below for the WIP photos which are, once again, sadly badly taken. My camera is outside in the car and its cold, so I have been using an older camera which doesn't 'do' macro shots. The  wonderfully sculpted miniatures are all from the Pendraken Late Roman range. They still need to be flocked and touched up, but I'm quite happy with the way they turned out.

Next up, I'm going to start working out a four game campaign to give all the warbands a run. When I'm in a position to play them out, I'll post better pictures and even attempt to record the events in some form of narrative AAR.

Dubh Fiach's Irish Raiders

Here is the third set of WIP photos for my SAM-in-10mm project - Dubh Fiach's Irish Raiders. The warband is mostly composed of Magister Militum elite Irish warriors, supplemented by Pendraken's Kiera figure. I'm quite happy with the way these guys painted up and can't fault the Magister Militum Irish other than to wish there was a bit more variety in the sculpts.

I must appologise for the quality of the photos - these were done late at night with bad lighting. Better shots will hopefully be taken of the flocked and finalised figures.

Kiera is presumaby based loosely on Keira Knightly's Woad/Pict princess from the 2004 move King Arthur, but I felt the boob-tube look might not be appropriate for my Irish raiders and so painted her in a shirt.

Arthur's Companions

We had an early start this (Queen's Jubilee) morning, sneaking out before the wee boy woke up to see the lighting of the Olympic flame in Belfast for the Irish leg of the torch relay. Ulster put on a traditional summer morning with chilly winds and the threat of rain. Still, the rain held off, the torch-bearers shivered and the flame was lit. A once in a life-time thing to see and I'm very pleased we went.

Getting home before 7am left a little free time before the madness of the young master's breakfast allowing me to finish up (sort of - still WIP really) the second of my SAM warbands - the Companions of Arthur himself. They look a little washed out in the photos but I went for a stormy steel and grey colour scheme, except for Artorius who has a small amount of gold and red to really make him stand out.

From left to right: Drystan, Cei, Bedwyr, Gwalchmei and Artorius.

This warband is loosely inspired by the recently popularised 'Sarmatian knights' theory of Arthur using Pendraken's 10mm cataphracts as the kontos-bearers and a clibinari as the mounted archer. These are mean, mean warriors, but as a result, are by far the smallest (numerically) of my four set warbands. As always, more details and photos to follow, when there guys are fully completed.
