Irregular Wars Wargaming 2024 round up, and a look ahead

And that's a wrap on 2024! It's been a busy and productive year for Irregular Wars Wargaming, and for hobbying in general.

Devilry Afoot was launched back in the summer and word seems to be spreading as the game continues to pick up more and more players. The rules have consistantly been in the top 20 sellers on Wargame Vault since release, and has now reached Electrum Best Seller status (in the top 6.25% of sellers).

I was gifted the headless horseman above (a Dragon Trappers Lodge 3D sculpt) by JB, and he might just hint at the first free expansion that will be coming for Devilry Afoot. Nothing too grand, just another monster profile with one or two new scenarios that will be made available to download through the Facebook group and slipped into the download pack on Wargame Vault. If that is popular there may well be more on the cards...

Andrew and I completed out most ambitious project to date with the Seleukid army for Magnesia (190 BC), built to be compatible with several different rule sets, including Fantastic BattlesFantastic Battles continues to be the gem in the Irregular Wars crown (a Gold Best Sell on Wargame Vault, top 3.46%).

Inspired by out new ability to each field 2,000 points worth of late Seleukids in Fantastic Battles, next year I hope to produce a free pdf for playing a two-player campaign variant where the aim is to secure dominance in a civil war while external forces press in from the outside. While the setting for our campaign will be historical, the rules will be compatible with any Fantastic Battles setting.

And of course, work is progressing on Fantastic Scuffles, a low-level skirmish game taking some of the mechanics of Devilry Afoot and blending it with the 'play your fantasy' ethos of Fantastic Battles. So far it has only been tested in-house with Andrew, Jim, JB and Brett, but the core concepts are in place and its almost ready for a staged roll out for wider playtesting.

I have no release date in mind at this stage; there are literally hundreds of thousands of possible profiles that could be built with the character builder (prototype auto-filling spreadsheet above), so playtesting and game-breaking could take some time!

Wishing everyone a happy hobby year for 2025!
