Devilry Afoot: Edge of Reason - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
This week we managed to get some playtesting in for the new Devilry Afoot: Edge of Reason scenarios. Jumping forward to the early 19th century, our flawed heroes were pitted against the 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Mean Streets' scenarios. Much was learned, a few things were tweaked. Playtesting continues.
In the first attempt, the lawyer Fitzwilliam was knocked unconscious by flying jack o' lanterns, before the retired soldier Captain Heighty was ridden down in short order by the headless horseman. A very quick and less than successful first attempt at the scenario!
Once more, isolated, but now indirectly responsible for the deaths of an additional two watchmen, Captain Heighty faced off against the horseman. The captain was in rude health, the phantom badly wounded. But when the sun rose in the morning, it was the lifeless body of Capitan Heighty who was found, and of the headless horseman, nothing but the fragments of smashed pumpkins.
Our third game saw a party of four monster hunters trying to hunt an abomination whilst themselves being hunted by the town watchmen. The evenning ended the way it started... disasterously!
The stories of the headless Hessian continue to grow in the quiet low lying lands of Westchester County. Ever since the disappearance of the schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, the frequency and ferocity of the attacks have increased beyond all reason. The watchmen are assembled and await only the call to bring them out to confront the phantom.
On the second attempt, Capt. Heighty legged it, taking the long way around, trying to make his way towards the watch house. Mr Fitzwilliam edged closer to the headless horseman to draw his attention.
Firing off his pistol, Fitzwilliam managed to wound the phantom Hessian. In response, the horseman hurled a jack o' lantern, failing to wound the lawyer, but forcing him to flee to the edge of the table.
There, the horseman pursued and savagely attacked and killed the unfortunate scholar, but not before Fitzwilliam managed to cause two further wounds to the monster.
Meanwhile, the captain had made it to the watch house, alerted the guards, and started to make his way back to confront the horseman.
Once again, Captain Heighty skirted the rough ground to approach the horseman from the far side, while the watchmen advanced directly towards the phantom. Where they were both slaughtered.

As I wote at the top of the post, tweaks were made to the monster profiles and scenarios and playtesting continues.
